BRAN MOECIU
LOCATION
The villages from the Bran-Moeciu-Fundata-Sirnea area are situated on the road to Transylvania, in Tara Barsei – a vast plateau surrounded by the Barsa, Bucegi, Ciucas and Piatra Craiului mountains. The region is extremely interesting from a folkloric and ethnographical point of view; the Bran-Moeciu-Fundata-Sirnea area has become a big tourist attraction in any season over the years.
Bran Castle – it is said that this castle was the home of the Romanian ruler Vlad Tepes also known as Count Dracula. Around this leader many legends have been weaved out of which the most popular is that the castle was the home of a vampire and might still be. It is a very important national monument and a landmark of tourism in Romania, not only for its beauty, landscape, but also because of the legend of Count Dracula whose spirit still haunts these ancient lands. The first written proof of the Bran Castle dates back to 19 November 1377, when Ludovic I of Hungary addressed a letter to the city of Brasov trough which it granted some privileges. Although the exact date at which it was built is not known, it is possible that work began as early as the spring of 1368. The castle was built as a military and customs complex. Essential changes in the castle took place in 1622-1625 after the plans of Gabriel Bethlen, prince of Transylvania, when a new wing was added and the entrance of today was put in use.
Transportation to and from the castle is done by bus and it costs 52 lei/person.
